A Look Back at Kenny Florian

Following his loss to one of the best fighters in the world, Jose Aldo, Kenflo suffered a back injury. There were rumors of the fact that he might retire following this devastating injury but many people cast aside this statement.

Well, here we are now. It’s time for us to reflect on the amazing, yet very disappointing career of Kenny “Kenflo” Florian.

He entered The Ultimate Fighter with an unimpressive record of 2-1, riding a split decision loss to submission specialist, Drew Fickett. Dana and Joe saw something else though, they saw a fighter that had the potential to be something. The season was featuring middleweights and light heavyweights. Let’s just say that Kenny was very undersized at middleweight. Despite this, he destroyed Leben with a 2nd round TKO and received a 1st round TKO from Diego Sanchez in the Finale.

He then decided to take it down a notch, specifically 15 notches. He dominated both Alex Karalexis and Kit Cope and once again dropped down another weight class. He found 155 lbs. to be his home. This statement was very clear when he beat out the always-entertaining Sam Stout with another dominating performance, a 1st round RNC. Riding a 3-fight win streak, he met Sean Sherk in the lightweight title fight for the vacant belt.

This was the first title shot.

He came up short in a bloody unanimous decision loss to “The muscle shark” but didn’t fail to impress. He followed his loss with a new dedication and finished the next 5 out of 6 fights with the one decision against Roger Huerta. He received another title shot, this time against one of the best of all time, BJ Penn. Kenny has been one of my favorite fighters ever since I found interest in this sport (which has been a fairly short time) and have never liked Penn’s attitude. To say the least, I was cheering for Florian to win this fight more than I do for most fights. The fight wasn’t the most exciting, but Kenny was arguably ahead on the scorecards against Penn, but Penn was eventually the victor via 4th round RNC.

It was a heartbreaking loss for Kenny; he receives a second chance at a title, and fails. Not many people receive one title shot let alone two. It was disappointing, but you can’t take anything away from Kenny, he lost to one of the best ever.

Kenny returned, though, as one of the most impressive fighters I have ever seen. His performances against Clay Guida and Takanori Gomi are the performances of one of the top pound for pound fighters. Clay Guida was one of the top guys in that weight class and Kenny Picked him apart with beautiful jabs, precise angles and counters, and eventually finishing the fight after he hurt Guida, with an RNC. His fight with Gomi was much of the same, actually, rather identical.

He was then in yet another title eliminator match, this time against the horribly boring dominant Gray Maynard. Maynard continued the dominance by dismantling Kenny in front of his hometown. It was sad, especially being there.

Now, all the things that I have been saying Kenny have been partly bitter, but I didn’t go into depth about all the really good stuff he has done.

The reason why? There were simply too many amazing performances of his to talk about them all.

He was apart of the project that saved the sport of MMA, received 3 title shots (and did a good job in all of those), and is a perfect representation of the sport. He is articulate, extremely smart, and very charismatic.  In my opinion, you don’t have to become a champion to get a vote for the hall of fame. I believe having the type of career in which you receive three title shots, not only warrants a HoF slot, but also deserves legendary status.

He fought at 4 different weight classes, continues to sponsor the sport as one of the main faces on TV as an analyst and commentator.

Kenny was one of the most entertaining fighters in UFC history. We will never forget him and all he has done for the sport.

Kenny will be a hall of famer.

The Ultimate Fighter Live Finale Predictions

Dave’s Picks
First off I would like to inform you all that my beautiful wife predicted every single fight correctly except one this entire season of TUF. No, she does not help me with my predictions…but maybe she should..

Main Card
Jake Ellenberger vs. Martin Kampmann: What a great fight. I love watching these guys but in my opinion Ellenberger is on another level at this point. Kampmann is a dangerous guy who can beat anyone if they get careless but Jakes is just a monster. Kampmann is almost impossible to finish but I think Jake needs to do that early on or he may be in trouble. Jake has shown that his gas tank can run dry due to his insane pace he keeps up and this one is a 5 rounder. If I was Jake I would intelligently try and finish this quick and I believe he can. I see Jake putting on pressure, getting a knockdown and then finishing Kampmann with crazy ground and pound. = Ellenberger by TKO in round 2. My Pick for KO of the Night!

Mike Chiesa vs. Al Iaquinta: Anything could happen in this fight but knowing that Al trains with Matt Serra makes me put some faith in him. The other thing that gives me great confidence in picking Al is that when I interviewed Urijah (Click here for that interview) he said he thought Al would win. Urijah coached both of these guys the entire time and he is choosing Al. I think Al has much better standup and better wrestling but Chiesa has a knack for pulling off crazy stuff. But I feel pretty safe picking Al. = Al by unanimous decision.

Max Holloway vs. Pat Schilling:
Max Holloway is a little monster. The kid is only 20 and has crazy standup skills. Go watch his youtube highlight video. I really like this kid a lot. We interviewed him recently (Click here for that interview) and you can tell he is just a great kid loving his time in the big leagues. But Schilling is no joke as well. This fight could be closer than I am expecting but I see Holloway dominating. = Holloway by TKO in round 1.

Jonathan Brookins vs. Charles Oliveira: I can’t wait for this one. This will be a very fun fight. Brookins is coming off the greatest win of his career by absolutely destroying Vagner Rocha and Oliveira is coming off a successful featherweight debut. If you were to ask me about this fight a year ago I would have likely picked Oliveira by a close decision but after their last couple fights I have to go with Brookins. However, this fight will be very close and expect some fireworks on the feet and on the ground. = Brookins by split decision. My Pick for Fight of the Night!

Prelims
Justin Lawrence vs. John Cofer = Lawrence by unanimous decision.
Myles Jury vs. Chris Saunders = Jury by split decision.
Daron Cruickshank vs. Chris Tickle = Cruickshank by unanimous decision.
Cristiano Marcello vs. Sam Sicilia = Marcello by 3rd round submission. My Pick for Submission of the Night!
John Albert vs. Erik Perez = Albert by unanimous decision.
Jeremy Larsen vs. Joe Proctor = Proctor by unanimous decision.

Sam's Picks
Main Card
Jake Ellenberger vs. Martin Kampmann: In a welterweight clash that will undoubtedly be an amazing fight, the winner is next in line for a title shot. At least, that’s how I feel about it. Apparently, Johny Hendricks is the next one to receive a title shot after Condit but I disagree. Hendricks is 4-1 in his last 5: decision loss to Story (not impressive), TKO victory over TJ Waldburger (pretty impressive), squeaked by Mike Pierce (not impressive), KO’d Jon Fitch in 12 seconds (extremely impressive), and squeaked by Josh Koscheck (not impressive). I don’t see how that deserves a title shot. Now what Ellenberger and Kampmann have done is much more impressive and worthy of a title shot. Kampmann is 3-2 (with the two being very controversial decision losses) and Ellenberger 6-1 in the UFC with the loss also being a controversial decision loss. But hey, lets get back to the fight. Between these two, the most impressive as of late is by far Ellenberger. A 50 second KO of Jake Shields, a dominating decision win of Diego Sanchez (besides the 3rd round), and another KO of a game Sean Pierson. Kampmann on the other hand, was being dominated by Thiago Alves until Alves made a horrible mistake and Kampmann capitalized on it. Personally, I think that the deciding factor will be Ellenberger’s power and momentum in the UFC. But if he doesn’t finish, Kampmann will win by unanimous decision = Ellenberger by 2nd round TKO. My pick for KOOTN and 1st for FOTN!

Mike Chiesa vs. Al Iaquinta: Iaquinta has rolled along the competition in TUF despite his two close fights between Jury and Pichel, he never really took damage in those fights. Chiesa on the other hand, has taken lots of damage in his last fights. Almost being finished by Lawrence with a body shot and submitted by Vick. He has a lot of heart, but simply not the technique that Iaquinta holds. Look for Chiesa to pull off the upset and comeback if he isn’t finished in the first. I will be cheering for him = Iaquinta by 1st round TKO.

Max Holloway vs. Pat Schilling: I see this fight being a one sided beatdown handed by Max Holloway, and no I’m not just saying that because we got an interview with him, its because I thought that the second I saw this fight announced (which was before the interview). Schilling was destroyed by future contender in Daniel Pineda, and he looking terrible and not UFC caliber. Holloway, on the other hand, despite losing in the first round really impressed me in his debut. He was winning the standup against one of the top contenders in Dustin Poirier before being finished with a bizarre mounted triangle/armbar = Holloway by 2nd round TKO.

Jonathan Brookins vs. Charles Oliveira: This fight is probably the hardest one to pick on the whole card. These guys are both young phenoms who are undoubtedly going to fight for the title in the future. I’m going with Brookins on this on this one because he has been more impressive, knocking out the always dangerous Vagner Rocha brutally in one minute and barely losing to (now) title contender Erik Koch = Brookins by split decision

Prelims
Justin Lawrence vs. John Cofer = Lawrence by unanimous decision. My 2nd pick for FOTN!
Myles Jury vs. Chris Saunders = Jury by split decision. My 3rd pick for FOTN!
Daron Cruickshank vs. Chris Tickle = Cruickshank by 1st round TKO
Cristiano Marcello vs. Sam Sicilia = Marcello by 2nd round submission (choke). My pick for SOTN!
John Albert vs. Erik Perez = Albert by unanimous decision
Jeremy Larsen vs. Joe Proctor = Proctor by split decision

RIP Mr. Chiesa.

UFC 146 Main Card Recap

Stefan Struve vs. Lavar Johnson: This fight was quick and predictable. Struve knew that if he could pull guard, the fight would be over instantly, and it was. He quickly got the armbar, and even seemed to dislocate his shoulder. If Struve’s chin was better, he could very well be one of the best in the world, and I mean that. The kid has crisp standup and a brilliant ground game. And he’s only 24 years old. Scary stuff.

Possible matchups for Struve: Why not try and make the Struve/Hunt fight happen? Lavar Johnson didn’t move him up the ladder.

Possible matchups for Johnson: If Johnson wants to get himself back on track, he could easily KO Morecraft in the first round. Morecraft seems to always be the guy the UFC uses to rebound KO artists.

Stipe Miocic vs. Shane del Rosario: Miocic was the second example of how cardio is superior to blitzing. He survived the first round onslaught of devastating body kicks from del Rosario. Miocic came out and noticed that del Rosario tired and went in for the kill. This fight was really brutal, the finish was very bloody and del Rosario and a nasty gash that split his eyebrow right in half.

Possible matchups for Miocic: Miocic is the real deal. He has some amazing standup, good cardio (for heavyweight), and a solid ground game. He is the future in the heavyweight division. I would like to see him and Roy Nelson face off. Miocic needs to fight a big name.

Possible matchups for del Rosario: Fellow heavyweight, Brendan Schuab is also coming off a devastating loss. This fight would be very exciting and it would also send the loser of this fight down the ladder real far.

Roy Nelson vs. Dave Herman: This fight was a quick one but a sweet one. Nelson quickly dispatched of Dave Herman with one of his signature over right hands. Herman tried to argue the stoppage but he was clearly out. His whole body went limp and fell, the second punch brought him back from the dead.

Possible matchups for Herman: Herman is a weird dude. He has unlimited potential but he just cant seem to tap it. He seems to almost too unorthodox, that he doesn’t even know what he is going to do. Shawn Jordan, who is coming off an impressive win against Oli Thompson, would be a tough fight for both these guys.

Cain Velazquez vs. Bigfoot Silva: That was easily the best, and most violent, Cain Velazquez we have ever seen. He instantly took down Silva and bloodied him to a pulp. It was hard to watch, even for a hardcore MMA fan such as myself. I actually thought that Silva had a good chance at winning this fight based on the fact that Cain’s chin has been suspect since his fight with Cheick Kongo and Silva has planets connected to his arms. But Cain put any doubts to sleep when he absolutely demolished Silva in the first round.

Possible matchups for Velazquez: This one is quite easy. A second fight with the champ himself, Junior dos Santos. Dana said it himself; Cain is getting a title shot.

Possible matchups for Bigfoot: After being completely humiliated by Cain, he deserves an easier fight than the former champ. Silva is a seriously good fighter and could do some damage to some of the top guys at that weight class. I could see him against the winner of Kongo/Big Nog.

Junior dos Santos vs. Frank Mir: People and writers (including us) were saying that Mir had 0% chance of winning this fight. And it seems we were right on that. Mir’s chin is really starting to fade and a bad chin going up against the best boxing in MMA is not exactly the best combination. Dos Santos ran through the former champ in the second round, landing blow after blow, eventually making Herb step in and stop the fight.

Possible matchups for the champ: Dos Santos vs. Velazquez II, here we come!

Possible matchups for Mir: I would personally recommend Mir to retire, but that is obviously not going to happen. A fight with Gonzaga would be a good fight between two legends.

UFC 146 Prelims recap

So, I have to start out by saying that this was an amazing card. Dana said it was going to be awesome and it certainly was awesome. The only fights that I would say were boring would be the Brown/Pineda fight but that was on Facebook, and Dollaway/Miller. So let’s give this card a recap, along with future matchups.

Mike Brown vs. Daniel Pineda: In a rather lackluster bout, Mike Brown defeated the wily and scrappy Daniel Pineda in the opening fight. Although, Pineda lost this fight, he still has a bright future which was shown through his tenacity late in the fight, sweeping Mike Brown to get his back and nearly winning the fight after being dominated the first two rounds. Brown, on the other hand, is done. I’m not saying this because he hasn’t looked good; I’m saying this because he actually retired after this fight. It’s always good to see a fighter on a high note, even if it wasn’t that high.

Possible matchup for Pineda: Pineda has an extremely bright future ahead of him, but he has a few things he really needs to work on, like head movement, cardio, takedown defense. Once he gets those things down, he will certainly be a title contender and there is no doubt in my mind that he will be. Possibly Maximo Blanco, who is also coming off a loss, would be good, Pineda would really push the pace.

Kyle Kingsbury vs. Glover Teixeira: Glover Teixeira showed everyone why he has been such a hyped fighter. He came in against a guy who is really tough and just absolutely destroyed him. Teixeira did what Maldonado and Bonnar couldn’t do. He finished Kingsbury who is a really tough guy, and has really good standup. Glover came in, rocked him with an uppercut, got his back, pounded, Kingsbury rolled over, arm triangle, fight over. That is an impressive UFC debut to say the least.

Possible matchup for Kingsbury: After being shamefully dismantled by the extremely dangerous Teixeira, Kingsbury either needs a rebound fight or a loser goes home fight. I came up with a combo of both of these. A rematch with Fabio Maldonado would be perfect. Maldonado is very good and very underrated. His boxing is crisp and he has some hellish body shots, hard to watch. Along with the fact that it will certainly be entertaining, it was very controversial, people thought that Maldonado won, including myself. This fight certainly has value in both entertainment, and to answer questions.

Possible matchups for Teixeira: Clearly, Teixeira has been ready for the big time for quite a while, but visa problems delayed his readiness. He’s here now, folks, and he is hungry and very dangerous. I have been looking around for a good matchup for him and people have been saying that a fight with the winner of Vera and Te Huna would be good to show us who is ready to take a step up. A fight with Te Huna would be very interesting, and certainly exciting.

Paul Sass vs. Jacob Volkmann: Paul Sass truly had his coming out party against Volkmann. I was really confident in this pick despite the fact that I really wanted to go with Sass because I am a huge fan of guys who pull guard. But I looked at Paul Sass like I look Cody McKenzie, just a guy who, very predictably, goes for the same thing for every fight. Sass is another story though. Beating someone as good as Volkmann is truly impressive. Volkmann is a very strong and technical wrestler who was quickly rising up the ladder but Sass put that rise to sleep with that deadly “Sassangle”. Sass clearly needs to work on his standup but once his standup is good enough to get himself safe enough to either takedown or pull guard, he should really do some damage in the lightweight division.

Possible Matchup for Sass: A really good grappling match, one that serves tow purposes: entertainment and to show who is ready for a step up. Would be a fight with Mark Bocek. I think this fight would be not only very fun to watch these two brilliant BJJ guys go at it, but also to see how good Sass’ ground game truly is.

Possible matchups for Volkmann: Volkmann is a really good fighter. He has amazing wrestling, some of the most technical in his weight class. That’s why he was able to hang with guys at welterweight, despite a big size disadvantage. I can see Volkmann eventually getting up into title talks in the next 2 years, so if he will one day, then his next fight has to be a rebound one, but against someone with a name that means something.  A fight against the always entertaining Paul Taylor would be a good rebound fight for Volkmann, once Taylor is finally fully healed.

Dan Hardy vs. Duane Ludwig: This was one of the fights on this card that I wasn’t 100% about going into it. Neither more nor my brother were sure about our picks. I thought I was going to be right with my prediction with in the first minute when Ludwig caught Hardy, but clearly Hardy was the better fighter. I can guarantee you that Hardy will never go back into title contention, but he will certainly stay around for a while, being a part of some really entertaining bouts.

Possible matchups for Hardy: Obviously, Hardy will stick around at the level in which he will fight people with name value but wont really move him up anywhere in the welterweight ladder. Rich Attonito could certainly be that type of fight, once he gets healed after pulling out of his fight with Rick Story. Hardy versus Attonito would certainly be entertaining.

Possible matchups for Ludwig: Clearly, Ludwig is starting to falter. His chin is weakening and the doors are closing in on him in his MMA career. If he wants to keep his career rolling, he should do it against someone like Matt Brown, whom he could definitely out strike on the feet. It also has a ton of entertainment value in it.

CB Dollaway vs. Jason Miller: This fight was gross. I have never, and will never, be a fan of CB Dollaway. He complains and puts on boring fights in the ones that he wins. It was also a very sad fight. Miller looked really good at the weigh-ins and the beginning of the first round but clearly his knee was hurt coming into the fight. He had some Sakuraba tape around his knee and he feel on it and was blatantly limping. CB won pretty handily, but it certainly wasn’t pretty. Miller retired and was cut following the loss.

Possible matchups for Dollaway: Dollaway is making his way up after this win against Miller. A fight against Brad Tavares would show who has the chops to take a step up in competition.

Jamie Varner vs. Edson Barboza: This fight was absolutely shocking. Varner blitzed Barboza in the first round. Not even Varner saw that coming. It literally surprised everyone, including the WINNER. I have to be honest though, I was cheering for Varner coming into this fight. I always love a good comeback story, career or fight wise. Barboza was in the middle of title talks following his breathtaking KO of Terry Etim. Varner came in as an extremely heavy underdog, but he made those betting for him some rich people.

Possible matchups for Varner: The person that came to mind was Donald Cerrone, but that would not make any sense, it would only happen for entertainment purposes. Since Varner, rather easily, dispatched one of the top contenders in the lightweight division, it only makes sense that he gets another good fighter, but not as high up the ladder as Barboza. A fight against Jeremy Stephens will not only help out with the lightweight ladder, but it would also be a guaranteed FOTN.

Possible matchups for Barboza: Barboza is still one of the best in his division, with some of the fastest and technical standup in the game. He needs a rebound fight. Plain and simple. Matt Wiman, who is a very good fighter, could prove to be a good test for the (still) rising star in Barboza.

Diego Brandao vs. Darren Elkins: Elkins was just one of the two examples that toughness and cardio always beats out a blitz like the one in the first round. Elkins was another hefty underdog prior to the fight, so whoever bet on him and Varner is quite the rich man (or woman). I really wanted to pick Elkins; I have always thought that Brandao is an incredibly overrated fighter. He gasses after the first round, at featherweight. 145ers are not supposed to gas out after the first round. Elkins is an underrated fighter; it’s mainly because of his quick loss to Oliviera and one-sided win (loss) to Omigawa. He is solid wrestler and is tough as nails. I personally scored the fight 28-27 for Elkins. 8-10, 10-9, 10-8.

Possible matchups for Elkins: Elkins needs a step up in competition. He could really do some damage in his division if he continues to fight smart. He could very well fight the loser of the Hioki/Lamas fight. A win over Brandao is huge for Elkins.

Possible matchups for Brandao: This overrated maniac will only be a tough gatekeeper at featherweight. A fight against Robbie Peralta would either be good rebound fight for Brandao or a career launcher for Peralta.

CR Exclusive Interview with Urijah Faber!

So, as some of you may know we did a contest here at CR recently. The contest revolved around me (Dave) joining in on a video chat with Urijah Faber held by the UFC’s Fight Club. Well the contestant who came up with the best question won. We asked the contestant’s question first and he received a hardcover copy of Urijah’s brand new book!
I went into the chat room early and was the only person in there. When Urijah finally came on there were only 12 of us in the chat room. So, as any smart journalist would, I took advantage of it and asked 95% of the questions.
Only a couple other questions were asked at all and it was brilliant stuff like “what is your favorite alcoholic beverage”…No joke.
Anyway I recorded all of my questions and his incredible answers. He was open and honest. Urijah is more than the Hollywood jock that some people portray his as. You guys will love this “interview”.

Contest Winner's Question!: 1) In what areas do you think Renan Barao is more dangerous than Cruz?
“Barao is more dangerous than Cruz in the fact that Cruz isn’t dangerous at all. Cruz is good at what he does. Cruz is more elusive than Barao. He is probably in better shape than Barao, a little faster than Barao but Barao is definitely more dangerous; on the ground, standing with his kicks, knees, and punches. Plus his submissions.

2) What has your experience coaching on TUF (The Ultimate Fighter) been like?
“Being a coach on TUF has been awesome; it’s a lot of work though. I got my own training to do and I got all these new guys I’m getting acquainted with. But once we got the ball rolling it’s been pretty easy. I have a lot of great training partners. These guys are some of the top up and comers in the nation and in the world really. We got guys from Brazil and the UK. Some are ’45 pounders and I’m a pretty big ’35 pounder so it evens out.”

3) Who out of your TUF team do you see being the most successful in the UFC?
“I think there are a lot of guys on the TUF roster that are going to be successful in the UFC. You see time and time again where these guys who are on the show end up having great careers in the UFC. Even if they don’t win the show but Al (Iaquinta) is a guy that I feel has the right mind set and the right discipline and things are going his way. He’s a guy that, in my opinion, is the favorite to win TUF but I think most of the guys that decide to stick it out and decide to continue on this journey are going to have good careers in the UFC. Chiesa, Proctor. You know all the guys there, Saunders, Ogle, you know everybody, Sam Sicilia and Cristiano Marcello. All the guys are tough”.

4) How much did you have to change in your training camp in order to prepare for Barao?
“The fight is completely different between Cruz and Barao. So, I had to change the game plan basically so I’ve been working on a lot of things. I’ve been working with Phil Nurse a little bit with this fight, trying to be a little more creative with my standup. I’ve been working with Mark Dellagrotte, who is awesome with standup in MMA, and then my whole team is here (Las Vegas). Master Thong and all my training partners are here and just working on my offense but understanding that now it is a completely different fight.”

5) What did you learn in your last fight with Cruz that will help you defeat him next time?
“In the last fight with Cruz I was punched with some of his heaviest punches and I felt like they didn’t really affect me. I think I could us a little bit more like point scoring, more takedown attempts and maybe throw in a couple more punches and kicks. But other than that I think I did a good job. I dropped him a couple of times and I don’t feel like I was beat up in that fight. So, you know just more of the same but land a higher percentage of punches and takedowns. And get the finish.

6) Out of all your accomplishments which one is most meaningful?
“I think that my biggest accomplishments are yet to come and I’m not sure what they are yet. But I think if I had to say one thing it’s just being able to live a life that is all by my own design. You know with my own passion, making my own schedule. That’s not something that a lot of people are able to do. I’m able to spend 100% of my time doing things that I love and that’s probably the biggest accomplishment yet.”

7) What did you want to accomplish by putting out your new book?
“Putting out that book for me was basically; first and foremost it was really therapeutic to write all of that stuff. I’ve been kind of introspective my whole life and going to college and learning about human development and kind of seeing different people in my life taking different paths and the influences that I’ve had. I think that it was just something I wanted to do for myself but I think it could help people and the overall message is encouraging people to follow their own passions and making their own laws and learn from my mistakes and the things I’ve succeeded at. I think people are really enjoying the book.”

8) At the end of your career what do you want people to remember about you most?
“At the end of my career, I just want people to remember me as a guy that was basically always fighting to the bitter end. Someone you know that was able to compete at multiple weight classes. Be a world champ at multiple weight classes. And someone that spread some positive light on this sport. I feel like I kind of have been looked up to over the years as somebody that’s a positive representative of the sport and I have done my best to do all of the PR and be a positive impact and help bring the lighter weights out. I want to just be known for being a trendsetter.”

9) If you were forced to say something nice about Dominick Cruz's personality what would you say?
“I think there are some things about Dominick that are commendable. I think he’s a guy that really is himself. He’s not ever trying to act like he is something that he’s not and I respect that a lot. You know guys like that. You know guys like Nick Diaz, well, a lot of people don’t like Nick Diaz but he is just being himself and so I think Dominick is true to who he is. He also has a champion mentality. He works hard and he pushes through adversity. And I think he has grown up a lot but he still gets on my nerves.”

10) Which fighter was a big inspiration to you?
“Randy Couture is the guy that has been a big inspiration to me. I’ve known him; you know he was there at my third fight at an Indian casino. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson is also another guy that I’ve known and has been around since I first started my career on those Indian reservations. And I’ve learned a lot of stuff about marketability from “Rampage” and putting on a show. And from Couture just to be a great guy, he is always trying to help other people out and he is not afraid to take people under his wing and just be himself. People love him because he is such a solid dude and he was never boasting or putting on a front.”

11) What is the atmosphere at alpha male during big training camps?
“The atmosphere in our gym is always just a lot of fun. Everyone is happy to be there but it’s really intense during training. We spar hard and are always beating the crap out of each other but we have the music blaring and Master Thong is dancing around and everybody is cracking jokes. So it’s pretty fun.”

12) Besides Sacramento or other cities in California, what city gave you the most support?
“Oh man, it’s hard to say but there, out of California, everywhere I’ve gone has been a great response. I got a lot of fans in Utah. Whenever I go anywhere I feel like I’ve got great fan support. I’m lucky like that. I’ve really been lucky in the fact that people get behind me. I think they feel like they know who I am and that I’m being real and I think they like that.”

13) After weigh-ins and fights what do you eat?
“My favorite meal after weigh-ins is a meal that my mom used to make for me for my birthday. It’s turkey potato burritos and a bunch of little condiments.”
After a fight: “I eat the same stuff all the time. I just basically eat more or less of it so like a nice dinner like any restaurant. I love Thai food, I love Japanese food and I love Mediterranean. I’m a food connoisseur.”

14) When you first started off in MMA did you ever see yourself being this successful?
“When I first started out in MMA I definitely thought I was going to be successful. I envisioned it; I believed it and that was my goal. What I didn’t know was how successful the sport was going to be. I felt like there was at that time, in 2003, not much promise for our sport. But there were people that were, in my opinion, were heroes. You know guys like Tito Ortiz and Randy Couture and BJ Penn and Jens Pulver. These are guys that were fighting on the biggest stage and you didn’t know how much money they were getting or what was at stake or anything else. All you know was that these guys are on TV and you’re getting to watch them fight and it seemed like a big deal. So, I envisioned being there with the best but I had no idea the sport would blow up like it has. But I was wishing it would.”

15) (Last question of the chat.) Has it been hard to stay focused with being so famous and the face of the lighter weight classes in MMA?
“I don’t know if I’m that famous. Justin Bieber is famous. I’m just kind of well known. I don’t have any chicks trying to tackle me or any weird stuff like that. You know, it can be irritating every once in awhile but for the most part I’m just flattered that people are interested in me and enjoy what I do and I like to help motivate people as well and so it has been pretty cool”.

Good stuff from Urijah! It was a very cool and fun experience and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

So what did you think? Let us know on twitter @Champion_Rounds

UFC 146: Dos Santos vs. Mir Predictions

Sam’s Picks
Main Card

Junior Dos Santos vs. Frank Mir: This has been considered one of the most unwarranted title shots in UFC history and I can’t help but agree with that. Mir KO’d Cro Cop in one of the worst main events of all time, dominated Roy Nelson in a grueling match that they both struggled in, and submitted Nogueira after nearly being KO’d himself. Dos Santos has not shown a single weakness in his UFC thus far. Mir has no chance in this fight! = Dos Santos by 1st round KO. My pick for KOOTN!

Antonio Silva vs. Cain Velazquez: Cormier destroyed Silva by KO in the first round. Velazquez is just a better, larger version of Cormier. I’m still really happy to see Silva in the UFC though, he will be a good gatekeeper at heavyweight in the UFC = Velazquez by 2nd round TKO.

Dave Herman vs. Roy Nelson: This is a really hard fight to pick. Nelson has looked absolutely horrible lately. Herman is such an unpredictable fighter, that you can never tell whether he will look really good, or like a piece of crap. The safer pick would be Herman. Nelson almost lost to Cro Cop, dominated by Mir and Dos Santos, and annihilated by Fabricio Werdum. I see Herman playing it smart, and utilizing his reach, picking him apart = Herman by unanimous decision. My 3rd pick for FOTN!

Shane Del Rosario vs. Stipe Miocic: I am very excited for this fight. They are both up and coming undefeated heavyweights really looking to make names for themselves. Miocic has an extremely bright future ahead of him. He was a very good NCAA D-1 wrestler and a Golden Glove champ. That is a very good MMA background. Del Rosario, on the other hand, has very sloppy kickboxing and an okay ground game. Miocic should win this one handily = Miocic by 3rd round TKO.

Lavar Johnson vs. Stefan Struve: This fight is one of the few fights that could literally go either way. It could either be Johnson by early KO or Struve by first or second round submission. The safer pick would be Johnson, but the possibly smarter choice would be for Struve. Johnson has one of the most shameful ground games under the ZUFFA banner. Is he even a Mixed Martial Artist? It doesn’t even seem that he trains for submission defense. All he does is power his way out; at least Barry used a little technique while defending against the armbar in the Morecraft fight. Struve has all the qualities to become a future champ, but his chin betrays him often. That’s the danger. This is a scary one = Struve by 1st round submission (RNC). My pick for FOTN!

Prelims
Diego Brandao vs. Darren Elkins = Brandao by 2nd round KO (another hard one)
Edson Barboza vs. Jamie Varner = Barboza by split decision. My 1st pick for FOTN!
C.B. Dollaway vs. Jason "Mayhem" Miller = Mayhem by 2nd round submission (arm)
Dan Hardy vs. Duane "Bang" Ludwig = Ludwig by unanimous decision. My 2nd pick for FOTN!
Paul Sass vs. Jacob Volkmann = Volkmann by split decision
Kyle Kingsbury vs. Glover Teixeira = Teixeira by unanimous decision
Mike Brown vs. Daniel Pineda = Brown by split decision

Dave’s Picks
Main Card

Junior Dos Santos vs. Frank Mir: Frank Mir’s record is 16-5 with all 5 of those losses coming by way of KO. JDS is 14-1 with 10 of those wins coming by way of KO. If that doesn’t tell you something right there then you’re crazy. But Mir is a threat to anyone. He does have punching power and he is one of the best grapplers in the world. If it goes to the ground, especially with Mir on top, JDS could definitely be in trouble. However, JDS has never been taken down and he has fought some great wrestlers and grapplers. Cain Velasquez, Shane Carwin, Roy Nelson, Gonzaga, Struve, Werdum. These are all top level fighters and grapplers. And no one could even come close to doing anything to him. In my head I see JDS knocking Mir’s head off his body. And that is truly the most likely scenario. I feel very safe with this pick. = JDS by KO in round 1. My Pick for KO of the Night!

Antonio Silva vs. Cain Velasquez: Bigfoot is coming off a big KO loss to Daniel Cormier. Cormier is a smaller heavyweight with decent striking and great wrestling who trains at AKA. Well, that sentence also works for Cain Velasquez. They are very similar and train together, that’s huge. Silva has yet to fight in the UFC but I don’t think he will get the jitters. But I see Cain emulating Cormier’s game plan but mixing in more wrestling. There is a good possibility that Silva could KO Cain but as long as Cain plays it smart he should win. = Cain by unanimous decision

Dave Herman vs. Roy Nelson: So, Herman is taking this fight on short notice and it scares me a bit. Herman has not looked great in his two fights in the UFC. He beat Einemo but got clipped way too much by a BJJ guy. He started off okay against Struve but was finished in the 2nd round. Herman also has never really faced top level competition outside of Struve. Nelson has had a UFC career of mixed results. He has had some major highs and major lows. However, he has power and if Herman lets himself get punched in the face, as much as he has in his other fights, he will go to sleep. Plus I think Nelson has the advantage on the ground as long as he is on top. Anything can happen in this fight but if JDS, Mir and Werdum can’t KO Nelson then I don’t think Herman can either. I'm struggling with this one but I'm going with my gut. Probably will be a close one. = Herman by unanimous decision. My Pick for Fight of the Night!

Shane Del Rosario vs. Stipe Miocic: Shane looks to have a big future in this sport. He has great potential and hopefully will accomplish a lot. But there are a few major factors to consider. He has fought twice in the last 2 years and hasn’t fought at all since February 2011. And the other factor is due to a horrible injury. Plus, he will be making his UFC debut and we all know that can play a factor. Stipe is also a great talent in his own right. He has good striking and kicks with power in both. His wrestling is very good too. I see this fight going exactly like this: they come out standing, Stipe starts landing bombs, Shane goes in for a sloppy takedown and it gets stuffed, Stipe unloads and the ref steps in. = Stipe by TKO in round 1.

Lavar Johnson vs. Stefan Struve: So, originally Struve was supposed to fight Mark Hunt who is a deadly kick boxer but Hunt was injured a couple weeks ago. So, Lavar Johnson is stepping in. Lavar is bigger and stronger but has less tools. Lavar rarely kicks and his ground game is much worse than Hunt’s. Struve is my boy! I talked to him for a bit in December before his fight with Dave Herman. He told me that he will fight smarter from now on. And he did against Herman. If this stays standing Lavar can KO Struve but if it goes to the ground Lavar will be finished within 1 minute. And I see Struve playing it smart and taking it to the ground and finishing it quick. = Struve by submission in round 1. My Pick for Submission of the Night!

Prelims
Diego Brandao vs. Darren Elkins: Diego by TKO in round 2.
Edson Barboza vs. Jamie Varner: Barboza by TKO in round 3.
C.B. Dollaway vs. Jason "Mayhem" Miller: Mayhem by unanimous decision.
Dan Hardy vs. Duane Ludwig: Hardy by split decision.
Paul Sass vs. Jacob Volkmann: Volkmann by unanimous decision.
Kyle Kingsbury vs. Glover Teixeira: Kingsbury by split decision.
Mike Brown vs. Daniel Pineda: Brown by majority decision.
