UFC 136 Predictions

Dave’s Picks:
Main Card

Champ Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard (for lightweight title): I can’t wait for this fight. At UFC 125 these guys had a classic battle that led to a draw. Everyone wants to see this trilogy end in style. Frankie should have a lot of confidence coming into this fight because Gray threw everything he had and still couldn’t finish him. Frankie ended their last fight with all the momentum and that could carry over into this fight. Gray is bigger, stronger and meaner but Frankie has been beating guys like that his whole career = Frankie Edgar by unanimous decision.

Champ Jose Aldo vs. Kenny Florian (for featherweight title): This should be an exciting technical battle between two very good strikers with great BJJ backgrounds. I think Aldo will have the edge on the feet due to his speed but Kenny should have a slight advantage on the ground. Kenny has submitted many guys in the UFC but Aldo has yet to show us his BJJ skills. If Kenny can take this to the ground, which I think he can, he will win this = Kenny Florian by unanimous decision.

Chael Sonnen vs. Brian Stann: I Love Brain Stann. How could you not love him? I don’t like Chael Sonnen at all. I think he is actually clinically insane. Stann has the better standup but Chael’s wrestling is just too good and we will see a classic Chael win = Chael Sonnen by unanimous decision.

Melvin Guillard vs. Joe Lauzon: Guillard has been looking amazing since he joined Jackson’s camp. He was already an amazing athlete but now he has honed in his skills to become a dominant force in the lightweight division. Lauzon will not be able to get this to the ground and will suffer on the feet for it = Melvin Guillard by TKO in round 2. My Pick for KO of the Night!

Leonard Garcia vs. Nam Phan: A repeat of a good fight that resulted in one of the worst judge’s decisions in UFC history. Nam Phan won every round in their first fight but Garcia won due to his crazy style. I see a repeat of last time but hopefully the judge’s don’t mess up again = Nam Phan by unanimous decision.

Prelims
Demian Maia vs. Jorge Santiago = Maia by submission in round 2. My Pick for submission of the Night!
Anthony Pettis vs. Jeremy Stephens = Pettis by split decision. My Pick for Fight of the Night!
Joey Beltran vs. Stipe Miocic = Miocic by split decision,
Darren Elkins vs. Tiequan Zhang = Elkins by unanimous decision.
Eric Schafer vs. Aaron Simpson = Simpson by TKO in round 3.
Steve Cantwell vs. Mike Massenzio = Cantwell by TKO in round 2.

Sam’s Picks
Main Card

Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard: It’s finally here. The third and (hopefully) final fight of this surprisingly exciting trilogy. I love Edgar, mainly because he beat BJ once but then destroyed him in my hometown, sweet! But I also like his fighting style, the classic in-and-out striking style with some takedowns here and there without ever stopping. Frankie never stops, ever, which is huge in this fight because Maynard doesn’t have that endless gas tank like the champ. Maynard is really strong and all that but he doesn’t have the cardio to go 5 hard rounds with Edgar, which he showed in their second fight. He gassed out near the end. I’m nervous and really excited for this fight = Edgar by unanimous decision.

Jose Aldo vs. Kenny Florian:
Now, I love Florian and all but I truly don’t believe that he deserves this title shot. One win “in-a-row” at a new weight class gives you a title shot nowadays? This should be Mendes in the co-main event with Aldo. Ok, back to the fight. Aldo looked bad in his last amazing fight with Hominick, but it was because he had a lot of cutting weight problems and had the flu. He said that he is 100% coming into this fight and I believe him. Florian seems to choke in his big fights: TUF 1 finale with Sanchez, the title fight with Sherk, title fight with BJ, and his homecoming fight with Maynard in Boston. That is a lot of proof of choking in big fights. Aldo will be tested but not tested enough. His biggest test will definitely be Mendes = Aldo by unanimous decision.

Chael Sonnen vs. Brian Stann: Stann is a literal hero and a warrior. Ever since his loss to “The Polish Experiment”, he is a completely different fighter, he is extremely technical and even more powerful. Sonnen is a mystery and I hate him. He is an awful, racist, homophobic liar who has no reason for such a class act such as Stann to like him. I truly believe that this is Brian Stann’s time and that he will make the most of this fight = Stann by 2nd round TKO.

Melvin Guillard vs. Joe Lauzon: If this was the old Guillard, I’d say that this would be a rather easy fight for Joe, but Guillard looks like a machine when he enters the Octagon. This will be a pretty easy fight for Guillard = Guillard by 1st round KO.

Leonard Garcia vs. Nam Phan:
Their first fight pissed me off. I think that it pissed everyone off and it should’ve. Phan destroyed Garcia for three straight rounds and Garcia wins by split decision? Makes no sense but I believe that this fight will go the same but with Phan actually winning this fight = Phan by unanimous decision.

Prelims
Demian Maia vs. Jorge Santiago = Maia by 3rd round submission.
Anthony Pettis vs. Jeremy Stephens = Pettis by unanimous decision.
Joey Beltran vs. Stipe Miocic = Miocic by unanimous decision (no one will finish Beltran).
Darren Elkins vs. Tiequan Zhang = Zhang by 2nd round submission (choke).
Eric Schafer vs. Aaron Simpson = Simpson by split decision.
Steve Cantwell vs. Mike Massenzio = Cantwell by split decision.
